Antique Windsor Rocking Chair?Victorian Era for sale in Greers Ferry, Arkansas

$150

Background
I purchased this Windsor rocking chair at an estate auction over 25 years ago. The estate was being held by the great granddaughter of the original owner. She told me it had been passed down from her great grandmother, to her grandmother, to her mother and finally to her. That meant the chair had been made sometime during the mid to late 1800?s. There are no manufacturer?s markings, so it was probably hand-crafted by a local furniture maker during that period. It had a broken backrest spindle, worn-out seat cushion and a small crack in one of the seat frame pieces. I took the chair to a professional cabinetmaker for repairs. He crafted a replacement spindle and stained it to match the originals. He also repaired the cracked seat frame and reinforced it with dowels. I then took it to an upholsterer and had the seat cushion replaced, using materials and techniques that were faithful to the Victorian era. It has since had very little use and it remains in excellent condition.
Construction
The curved backrest (hoop) is made of hand-carved solid oak. The seat frame and the rockers are also made of solid oak. All of the spindles (backrest, armrests, legs and leg supports) are made of lath-turned, solid maple, including the one that was replaced. The seat cushion is cotton wadding covered with heavy cotton brocade cloth. The cushion is supported by hemp webbing below and fastened to the seat top with brass upholstery tacks. The wood finish is dark walnut.
